Expression through art is an activity that has social value and is socially acceptable. Therefore, therapy based on such activity is less stigmatizing. It allows the integration of the child’s unimpaired aspects while he/she is undergoing therapy. Thus he/she may work on his/her weaknesses and ways of coping with them, while at the same time uncovering his/her strengths. This has a positive effect on self-image (Wengrower).
There is a huge need in our schools for people to work with children who are suffering from emotional and psychological distress. Many of these children are unable to work to the best of their ability as outside circumstances are interfering with their capacity to be engaged with learning in the classroom. I am available to work in schools as an Expressive Arts Therapist, either to work with children/teens one on one or to run groups. I have a private practise in Epsom where children and their families can be referred to. I am able to utilise Arts Therapy diagnostic tools and formulate therapeutic interventions that target desired goals and outcomes appropriate to the child. As a former primary school teacher in West Auckland and a current drama therapist for a special needs school I am in a unique position as a therapist to know how to work within a school system.
